HP: G26x for $479.99

Specs: 15.6-inch LED display, Intel Core i3-370M (2.4 GHz) processor, Intel HD graphics, 4 GB DDR3 RAM, 500 GB 5400 rpm hard drive, battery up to 5.5 hours.

Thoughts: One of HP's most popular laptops, on sale at HP's Website, includes a $150 instant rebate and free RAM and hard drive upgrades to the specs listed above. HP has similar deals on other "everyday computing" laptops.

Specs: 17-inch screen, Intel Core i5-460M (2.53 GHz) processor, 512MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 switchable graphics, 8 GB DDR3 RAM, 640 GB 7200 rpm hard drive, Blu-ray player and DVD burner, battery up to 4.75 hours.

Thoughts: HP's high-powered Pavilion comes with big savings thanks to a $250 rebate, a free RAM upgrade to the specs listed above and a free built-in Blu-ray player. I dig the metal finish, too. HP has similar deals on other "high performance" laptops.

Dell: Studio 15 for $549.99

Thoughts: Dell's Studio 15 is perhaps the most unremarkable laptop on the market, but today it's noteworthy for its $200 discount, direct from Dell. And at the end of the day, it's a perfectly capable machine.
